The journey of Neanderthals to Britain likely began from mainland Europe. During periods when sea levels were lower, a land bridge known as Doggerland connected Britain to the European continent. This connection provided a vital migration route for Neanderthals and other species. They migrated in search of better hunting grounds and more favorable climates as Europe’s environment fluctuated between warmer and colder periods.

Evidence suggests that Neanderthals reached Britain around 400,000 years ago. Archaeological sites, such as those in Sussex and Norfolk, provide early evidence of their presence, where tools and other artifacts have been discovered. These sites reveal that the early Neanderthals were well-adapted to the temperate forests and open landscapes of Britain.
