Today we are going to discuss about Thyroid dysfunction and Pregnancy.
Thyroid is a gland located in the neck. It controls various metabolic activities in our body
Thyroid gland is controlled by TSH secreted from the pituitary gland in the brain.
TSH stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete Thyroxine hormone which in turn takes care of all the metabolic activities in our body.

What are the symptoms of Hypothyroidism?
👉 Gaining weight
👉 Feeling tired always
👉 Depression
👉 Irregular periods
👉 Constipation
👉Dry skin
👉Repeated miscarriages
👉Difficulty in getting pregnant

Diagnosis of Hypothyroidism ( low thyroxine levels):

Simple blood test such as
TSH
FT4

Can diagnose Hypothyroidism.

TSH will be elevated in cases of low thyroxine levels, because increased amount of TSH will stimulate the thyroid gland in an attempt to increase thyroxine secretion from the thyroid gland



Can a woman with thyroid have difficultly in conceiving?

Yes. Sometimes they can present with infertility.
Thyroid hormone ( thyroxine) is essential for ovulation as well as for embryo development and implantation!!


How to correct Thyroxine deficiency?

Very simple.

You will be started on thyroxine supplements according to your TSH levels and BMI( body mass index)

You will have to recheck your TSH levels once every 4- 6 weeks to titrate the dose.


Once you are pregnant, you will have to monitor your TSH levels once in each trimester.

When TSH levels are normal, it doesn't cause problems during pregnancy.
