Tiger Woods: How to chip 170 YARDS

In this golf lesson, Tiger Woods Reveals How to Make a 170 YARD CHIP SHOT with a 5 wood out of the rough. Tommy Fleetwood and Scottie Sheffler demonstrate while Tiger Woods explains. The setup at address is like a long flop shot, with an open stance and an open club face. The swing feels like you are making a punch 7 iron shot. Special Thanks to Vijay Singh for inventing this amazing chip shot, and much thanks to Tiger Woods and Taylormade Golf for sharing it with us!

Tommy Fleetwood: how many different shots would you have tiger with the five wood yeah with the five wood? Tiger Woods: I like a five wood that has options because I use it a lot. I don't use a two iron that often anymore because it's changed um but I love the fivewood out of the rough chopping down on it if say we're playing in bigger tournaments with high rough 170 yards out I might open up a fivewood and kind of chip one. uh I like having that option um my fivewood will carry about 255 but I can hit it either way yeah I have a setup so I can hit it either way um but I i' like it a lot to hit little chip shots out of out of rough primarily so I'd like a deeper face fivewood I don't like a shallow face five would just feel like like I might I might Sky one went out of the RO roof it right off the top of a face so my five was one of the older with a bigger thicker face I want hit some chip shots that are R now you can cutle around that tree Gap right it's probably a decent example yeah yeah yeah so I set that face open like that just chop straight down on top of it almost like hitting um a when you when you set it open like that do you set it I do set it then I grip it yeah so you've gone it's almost like hitting a long a long flop shot okay basically I mean I'm aiming left aiming way left chopping down on top of it and a best example would be like if you were going to hit like a punch seven iron through the trees yeah okay okay how you'd play it okay and just let the the meat of the club and all the size and the weight and the Loft do all the work for you so punch seven on yeah just chop straight down on top of it it's awesome see that was nice I got up another go what is the worst lie you would go for out like i' still played out of that yeah yeah no problem the face more open okay A a more left more open yeah and just more more more of a punch shot okay there oh yeah see again like 170 yard out you pull out wood but no problem right I know that I could run this ball up into the face of that bunker and be the up slope or happen to get it on a green gr but I can get it up in the up slope where it's an easy pullable bunker shot okay I got a three-wood I don't know if it works as good with the 3-wood this is the fun part so you're just setting it open like this and then gripping it just gripping it and just chopped on like as I said just like a little punch cut seven iron around on a tree exactly Golf Shop see how easy that is golf shop that is easy well done surprised how much you're actually able to get the ball to curve too out of that yeah cuz I mean typically you can't get no but all that mass is doing all the work for you getting through that grass I love the punch s an out like i' be trying to do just a thought yeah I've be trying to do all sorts trying to like figure it out it's just such a such a simple thought like you what's your ball position I'm depends on how high want to hit it but generally about normal I would never really move it too far back in my stance uh just because I wouldn't be able to get the ball in the air enough that's about it yeah but that's just trial and err but I just like that mass and that thought of just just chipping it I'm all I'm trying to do is Chip it down there because I I can't hit a 4 out of this stuff yeah this is going back always when BJ won I think nine times in a year he put in um either Seven wood or nine wood would um but open it up to about a fivewood loft and he would play this little 170 yard little chip shots out of rough were awesome to watch which at that time didn't exist no one played that shot um but no one really hits two irons anymore either because the ball doesn't spin enough so the fivewood become a pretty important Club to have in the bag
