It's Ramadan in Madura, and every midnight there are dance parties in the streets. On this pious, majority Muslim island off the coast of East Java, young folks fast all day then gather in the dark of the early morning to play daul (aka tong tong), a raucous fusion of local gamelan instruments and melodies with the instrumentation and modern arrangements of Western marching bands. Ostensibly played to wake up neighbors for the pre-fasting meal of sahur, daul is also just a great excuse to roam the streets with friends and make a lot of joyous noise.

In this footage, daul group Tinkerbell joins a late night parade in Sumenep with a Mad Max-esque vehicle (kereta) loaded with drums and metallophones.
