Pearl Gourami Breeding: Tips and Easy Tricks

BREEDING the PEARL GOURAMI:

•Breeding is a relatively simple process. Feed the pair live or frozen brine shrimp and worms for conditioning prior to breeding. Provide plenty of floating plants and raise the water temperature to around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Reduce the water level in the mating tank to around 6 inches. When fry have easy and quick access to surface air, it helps to promote natural development of the labyrinth organ.

•The process begins when the male constructs a bubblenest up to 10 inches in diameter among the floating plants; spawning occurs beneath it. He will begin to display to the female once the nest is completed.

•The male wraps his body around the female, who then releases hundreds of eggs. The eggs float upwards into the nest, and any stray eggs are collected by the male shepherd. The female is chased away after the eggs have been laid.

•The male then looks after the eggs until they hatch. After four days, all of the fry (baby fish) should be free swimming, and the male should be removed to avoid him mistaking the young for food.

•Several times a day, feed the fry liquid food or infusoria culture. At about two weeks of age, start feeding freshly hatched or frozen brine shrimp. When they are about a month old, they can be given fine-ground flake foods. Change the water every two to three days. Distribute the fry among several tanks as they grow to reduce the lethal buildup of wastes. Excessive waste often causes poor water quality, resulting in poor growth or sudden loss of fry.
