In 2023, the French government's proposed retirement system reform ignited a massive wave of protests and strikes. Eight major unions, including CGT, CFDT, and FO, joined forces to organize the movement. The first strike on January 19 drew a significant turnout from energy, transportation, education, and public sectors, with 1.12 to 2 million participants. Despite the massive mobilization, the government refused to back down on increasing the legal retirement age to 64.
