The first thing you see whenever you open the app is the big button for connecting to VPN servers. Right under it - are the details of the current server and these three dots. Clicking them brings out the dropdown menu with 105 countries and thousands of available servers spread across them. Servers themselves are separated into 3 categories. The important thing here is that “recommended” servers are chosen based on your current location. The rest are self-explanatory. Additionally, you can add any server you want into Favorites to get easy access and don’t bother using search when you need it.

Mac also specifically offers the “Smart Location” option, which will automatically pick the server with optimal speed and latency, as close to you as possible. Overall, it’s very easy to use on the basic level, but this server choice also illustrates one of the issues I have with ExpressVPN. There’s no need to have those windows popping up for everything. They are simply messy and distracting.

Start by going to the settings menu! It’s this small button in the top left of the app. That’s where we get to set General settings, such as startup configurations: I prefer to have ExpressVPN launched automatically when I turn on my computer, but you can make it so you only launch it manually - the choice is yours. This feature like here called “Network Lock” is what other VPNs typically call a “Kill Switch”. It’s responsible for keeping an eye out for your VPN connection - if it breaks or stops abruptly, the Kill Switch will cut the internet connection to prevent any unprotected traffic from leaking out. Needless to say, you must keep this feature on at all times, for your own safety.

After the general settings, let’s go into Advanced protection since that’s where ExpressVPN’s strongest features reside. Like Threat Manager - a feature whose entire purpose is to filter out ads, trackers, malicious links, and all other dangerous nonsense websites are trying to feed you. In case you have kids using your Mac, Parental controls are quite nice to help you make sure that ExpressVPN is not giving access to any dangerous information or content.

In settings, you can also specify the tunneling protocol for ExpressVPN to use. This protocol is where your performance and encryption come from, and the choice mostly stands between OpenVPN and Lightway. The first one is a general standard, not very fast but extremely safe. Lightway is a newer, proprietary protocol with a different, but reliable encryption and much faster performance. With my baseline at 300 Mbps, ExpressVPN shows only about 20% loss in speed, on par with other top VPN providers, like NordVPN or Surfshark.
