Most Australians don’t give automotive burnouts much regular thought. But for many teens in rural communities, they’re a serious sport backed by a highly competitive circuit. In Bairnsdale, a Victorian town with a serious ice problem and one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the state, a 'Young Guns' competition for participants aged 14 to 18 is thriving.
In the first episode of Australiana, we meet three teenage automotive burnout enthusiasts as they prepare for this epic event — fittingly called Rage in a Cage. Not only do we witness the joy of the burnout, but also how this niche sport is helping a community of isolated teens navigate family, mental health, isolation and the complicated task of growing up.
