Doju reads aloud and discusses the Kalama Sutta, an oft-quoted text amongst those interested in Buddhism in the modern West due to what some celebrate as an instruction from the Buddha to rely solely on one's own experience and reason in investigating Buddhist teachings and reality itself. He points out the problematic aspects of this idea and its prevalence in "Buddhist modernism" which some take as a license to pick and choose from the Buddhist tradition only what fits one's own preconditioned worldview based on scientific rationalism.
