How Much Wrist Hinge on Wedge Shots

Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf. I am at the Cimarron Golf Resort here in Palm Springs, California. Today we will talk about hitting more accurate wedge shots into the green. Hinging or cocking your wrists less in the backswing is a very simple action you can take to increase accuracy on wedge shots into the green.

So why does less wrist hinge increase accuracy on wedge shots into the green? Fully hinging the wrist adds power to the swing, but also carries with it the possibility that we might unhinge the wrists too early or late or turn the wrist during the hinge which may open or close the face of the club. Keeping the wrists quiet as long as you can into the backswing with little wrist hinge will keep the club face in the correct position. The power comes from the body, hips and torso turning through the shot, not from correctly timing the wrists.

PGA Instructor Mike Cahill and PGA Master Instructor Dave Cahill are here to help you play better and enjoy the game more. To learn more about pitch shots please come see us in Palm Springs for golf lessons or visit us for a Palm Springs a Golf School.
