the outline of the project was to create an artwork that will hang as the center piece of a counter-seating sushi restaurant. im pretty sure there won't be regular tables, just the bar. the horizontal composition naturally suggests landscape, and called imagery of traditional chinese and japanese scroll paintings to mind.
i went to the met museum back in december and felt inspired to combine iconic motifs (clouds, mountain range, and a blossom tree with cascading branches) while adding a touch of myself to it. im grateful for the opportunity to experiment and almost like, uncover the part of myself that got lost all these years, for fear of never being perfect and the paralysis of art block.
some extra touches i forgot to mention about the composition:
the mountains represent me, my sister, her partner, and their son... i thought it a nice symbol of us at this point in time, as the restaurant finally finishes construction after a long year of strenuous planning and logistical hiccups.
if you are in the boston area, stay tuned to hear about the place and maybe check it out if you're in the mood for good fooood! :•)
