With evil roaming the halls of Hogwarts and boy wizards battling basilisks, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is no bedtime story. Pupils are confined to their dormitories, teachers travel in pairs, and still the infirmary has more paralyzed patients than it can handle. Lurking in the forbidden forest are creatures with their own secrets capable of unlocking an ancient chamber, while fate awaits Harry Potter between the pages of a diary belonging to Tom Riddle.

If Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets taught audiences anything, it was the fact that J K Rowling had more than children’s stories to tell. Beyond the expansion of this world that introduced so many crucial characters, events moved beyond the personal and into the political. Elsewhere, discussions about class and identity were underpinned by an ingenious murder mystery. Begging the question, why is this second entry frowned upon by fans when it brings so much to the franchise?
