Sports Stadiums are among the most challenging designs you will encounter on several fronts. The main challenge is the extreme concentration of users requiring very high peak capacity within an open area, where it is very hard to control the isolation between the cells, and the unpredictable load pattern. Adding to these challenges is the mobility of users entering and leaving the event, who might spend some time outside the arena waiting to get in.
Modern stadiums and Stadiums will usually have multiple functions, such as concert venues, conference areas, meeting areas, hotels and hospitality within or near the same structure. Therefore, the capacity demands will shift depending on the function. The coverage requirements will be different if you have a big event on the playing field, e.g. a concert where the users will need coverage and capacity during the event, than they will be during a sporting event. The athletes will not require any capacity and you might want to switch those cells off in this case to limit the interference to the other cells. Sometimes all the capacity load could be in the conference areas and not in the open seating area.
If the arena is located in a dense urban area or close to any macro area where you already have strong signal levels, the challenge gets even bigger. You need to overcome the existing signals to have dominance of the cells within the arena, but at the same time avoid leakage from the arena to the nearby macro area.
If you are lucky enough to be involved with a stadium project, you will learn a lot – and most of all you will need to be prepared to spend a lot of time before, during and after the design in the actual arena, performing measurements and optimization.
I believe that you could write a whole book on stadium and arena planning alone, so con- sider the following inputs to your planning process. Adapt to the actual structure and demands of the project and surroundings, and prepare to spend a lot of time outside the office during site surveys, measurement campaigns and so on. Oh, and good luck!
