Skin gets its color from melanocytes cells which produce melanin. melanin production is controlled by Ultraviolet rays, hormones, birthmarks, inflammation.

Skin Lightening Treatments
two types
1. Medical Treatment

1. Topical Medicines
2. Oral Medicines
3. Injections

Skin Lightening creams
1. Sunscreen
Physical sunscreens are better than chemical sunscreen.
SPF should be above 30
Need to applied 3 times a day during peak hours 9 am to 4 pm
Formulation of sunscreen can be selected according to skin type, for oily skin matt finished or gel based are best, for dry skin lotion or creams are best choice.

2. Kojic Acid Based Creams
these creams can be started at home, and usually dont cause any side effect.
can be applied two times a day. best results with sunscreen
% of glycolic acid should be checked if you want to use in day also as higher % of glycolic acid can cause side effects.

3. Hydroquinone Creams
These are available as alone hydroquinone or with kojic acid creams.
these creams should not be started without consulting skin doctor.
Apart from causing sensitivity, redness, Hydroquinone can cause serious side effect "ochronosis" which can be irreversible too.

4. Fixed combination
it contains hydroquinone, tretinoin and steroid combinations.
it should not be used without dermatologist advice.
most of patient use them on their own and get serious side effects so avoid self medication.

Oral medicines & Injections are used when skin lightening creams are not effective. to achieve good results combination of creams and oral medicines can be used. oral tablet and injection treatments should be taken under guidance of qualified dermatologist only to avoid side effects.
