As one of the last steps of my Africa trip, I spent half a day in Iles Du Saloum Mangrove Forest. In this video, I show you both the scenery as well as the up-close shots as I venture into a mangrove forest.

Mangroves are a tree family; it's a type of tree. Mangroves are located in Intertidal Regions in Coastal Areas. In the intertidal region, the mangroves are exposed to salt water during high tide, and they are exposed to the air during low tide. Plants need oxygen to survive, and so, the systems have had to adapt in order to survive in this environment.

The root system of the mangrove is one of such adaptations. The roots, known as 'Stilt Roots', prop up the plant so as to prevent the shoot system from being submerged during high tide. During low tide, you can see the roots sticking out from the surface of the soil, these roots are called Neumataphors and act to extract oxygen from the atmosphere.

There is a lot more to know about why mangrove forests are as important as they are to our biosphere, but in this video, I would just like to give you a general view as well as show you the beauty of these regions in the tropics.
