2001: A Space Odyssey starts with a mysterious 3 minutes of complete darkness and atmospheric music. With this opening it seems as though Kubrick asks us a fundamental question: What is a film? Is it image and sound? Or can it be just sound? Could the black screen itself be viewed as an image? But if so... what does that black screen mean?
