The kung-fu movie genre is one that's often viewed as cheesy and non-sophisticated. The philosophy behind kung-fu, however, is actually contrary to the reputation of the genre and one of the few filmmakers who aimed to capture this essence of kung-fu in its most pure and classical form was Lau Kar-Leung. In this video essay, I wish to celebrate his legacy as a creator of martial arts films and analyze how he used cinema to portray "real kung-fu" to his audience.
