Tucked away among the oaks and pines of California’s Carmel Valley, Stonepine is a 407-acre estate that is full of rustic charm and sophisticated elegance. The estate was built in 1929 by Helen Crocker Russell—heir to the San Francisco banking family of the same name—and her husband, Henry Potter Russell. They named it Double H Ranch, for Helen and Henry.
Double H was purchased in 1983 by Gordon and Noel Hentschel, the latter of whom lends her name to the estate’s centerpiece: Chateau Noel. The Tuscan villa that was designed for the Russells by famed architect Francis Burrall Hoffman in 1929 has served as both a luxury hotel and a private residence, as well as a gathering space for families, site for celebrity weddings, and film-shoot location.
