📖 Overview
Notre Dame Cathedral, also known as Notre-Dame de Paris, is a stunning example of French Gothic architecture located on the Île de la Cité in Paris. Construction began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and was largely completed by 1260. The cathedral has witnessed numerous historical events, including the coronation of Napoleon and the beatification of Joan of Arc. The cathedral is renowned for its innovative use of the rib vault, flying buttress, colorful rose windows, and naturalistic sculptures. The two massive towers on the western facade are iconic. Inside, the cathedral features a nave with double aisles, square chapels, a choir, and an apse. The interior dimensions are impressive, with a length of 128 meters (420 feet) and a height of 35 meters (115 feet). Notre Dame has been the site of many significant events, including the 2019 fire that caused extensive damage. Restoration efforts are ongoing to return the cathedral to its former glory.
