Come along with me as I explore 2 important railway bridges located in the town of Gawler in the northern fringes of Adelaide, South Australia.
The South Para River and Gawler River Railway Bridges are 2 railway bridges located in the town of Gawler in the Northern Fringes of Adelaide located in an approximate close distance to each other.
Gawler River bridge is located on the railway line to Roseworthy and opened in 1860 when the line was opened to Kapunda. From Roseworthy, the line was also extended as far as the townships of Balaklava, Burra, Spalding, Moonta, Port Wakefield and Gladstone. However, declining patronage and services made the bridge see it's last train in 2007. In 2022, the line was blocked off from the Gawler line, and the wider Adelaide metropolitan network after a fence was installed at the bridge.
The South Para River bridge is located on the Gawler Central railway line between Gawler and Gawler Central stations. Unlike the Gawler River bridge, this one is still operated by Adelaide Metro train services till this date.
