Rinoa Heartilly served as the deuteragonist and main love interest in Final Fantasy VIII, but he role within the story was much more than that.

Having been the daughter of General Fury Caraway and Julia Heartilly, Rinoa had a complicated past that led to her carrying a lot of emotional trauma. Her development throughout Final Fantasy 8 showed how she started to overcome this, despite being the outsider. Even though her initial focus was Seifer, this shifted to Squall after Rinoa learnt to understand more about the man that was kept locked away.
