A few years ago, scientists captured an incredible image of the black hole at the center of our galaxy.

To spot the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A-Star, hit the darkness at 11 PM and face south. Look for a teapot figure in the sky—this is the constellation Sagittarius! Although you can't see the black hole directly, it's right there, just off the end of Sagittarius' bow.

If city lights obscure your view of the Milky Way, head out of town for a clearer, darker sky. Away from the urban glow, you'll see a faint band of light stretching across the sky. The Milky Way, a spiral galaxy made of billions of stars, awaits your gaze. Even though this picture might be of the spiral galaxy Andromeda, remember that we'd need to travel thousands of light years to get a bird’s eye view of our galaxy!

Star Gazers is the world’s only weekly series on naked eye astronomy. Each weekly episode features selected objects for naked eye viewing during the following week.
