British Columbia coastal and near coastal areas are warm enough for some hardy varieties of Figs. The Desert King Fig seems to be the favorite, but other varieties will grow.

I live at slightly higher elevation and the last few years we have had some heavy frosts early in the fall and cold spells in the winter which result in some die back of the plants. They always seem to survive though and come back quite quickly.

Bold, exotic-tasting, lusciously sweet figs grow on shapely trees with beautiful, lustrous subtropical-looking leaves. Many people new to the west coast are surprised that the fig tree does so well here.

If you have a sunny and reasonably warm and sheltered spot in your yard try growing one of the hardy fig trees. Fig trees are drought tolerant, pest-free, low maintenance and easy to grow. An added benefit is that you don’t have to wait for years to start getting fruit. Fig trees are fast growing, and with decent growing conditions, your tree can often start producing tasty figs the first year or two after you have planted them.

You don’t live on the cushy west coast? Fig trees grow and fruit beautifully in containers. This means you can grow fig trees pretty much anywhere in Canada by bringing the containers into a dark, cool or cold but frost-free place for the winter!

Best of luck growing your own fig trees. Try planting one and you will be surprised how well they do here in BC.
