AxiDraw vs. UUNA TEK® iDraw A3 pen plotter, which is better?! This video compares the most popular pen plotter on the market, the AxiDraw V3/A3 against the iDraw A3 by UUNA TEK. Both pen plotters have the same drawing area and use InkScape and the same plugin extension to communicate with the pen plotters.

In this video, the drawing is made with the same pen and paper, same drawing speed, same pen-up speed and acceleration. The difference of the drawings result in the specifications of each machine:

- The AxiDraw has a very rigid and stable frame which keeps the pen in perfect balance and adds to accuracy. However, the AxiDraw does not have additional springs at the pen holder plate. The pressure of the pen tip onto the paper relies on the weight of the pen (and gravity) only. Additionally, the angle of the pen is 45 degrees.

- The iDraw has a rather light frame of two metal rods that bend and shake slightly while the y-axis is completely extended on an A3 paper (as you can see in the video). That does not affect the accuracy though. Additionally, the pen holder plate has two springs that exercise additional pressure on the pen onto the paper. Thus the lines are very bold, however the pen tip can be damaged quickly. Moreover, the angle of the pen is at 40 degrees which also allows for better interaction between the pen tip and paper.

- The main difference of the two drawing results is due to the pressure of two springs in the pen holder plate (iDraw), the angle of the pen holder plate (40 vs. 45 degrees) and of course the frame structure itself.

I personally like the iDraw result. I made the drawing in Processing with the intension to merge the individual lines with the pen ink, to create an unexpected outcome that is different from the digital file. The AxiDraw on the other hand is too precise and lacks the additional pressure of the pen. Of course the AxiDraw is an extremely precise machine and perfect for detailed and accurate drawings. I am happy with both machines with each its own specific behavior that I exploit for various works.
