Today we will tell you some interesting facts about Hallstatt, Austria, at the Hallstatt Lake. The market town Hallstatt is in the very popular tourist region called "Salzkammergut" in Austria and houses a population of 754 people. Idyllic, old-school buildings are crammed together between the Hallstatt Lake and the steep mountains right next to it. You have probably seen this scenery in several photos from the most beautiful village in the world!

But why did people move to such an exceptional area? The entire "Salzkammergut" region has always been rich in salt, which led to human settlements as early as 5,000 B.C.! The connection between Hallstatt and salt goes even further: The phrase "Hall" in Hallstatt is often found in the names of cities that have historically had a connection to the salt industry. This is not only the case in Austria, but also in Germany with some other popular examples being Schwäbisch Hall and Reichenhall.
