The biggest mistake new writers make, beyond forgetting to be famous to begin with, is not writing a perfect first chapter.

From Moby Dick to Slaughterhouse Five to Tek War, some of the greatest novels of all time had an unforgettable opening. However, a great beginning is all about intrigue. To can whip out your literary might and dangle it in front of your reader's face, but be sure not to blast them with the whole load.
