Union Pacific 6900 made its maiden voyage from Omaha to Ogden Utah in May 1969 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the golden spike. 47 of these units were built, given the name "Centennial" and numbers in the 6900s.

These EMD DD-40X are the worlds largest single unit diesel locomotives. They have not one, but two turbocharged v16 diesels and 8 traction motors on 4 axle trucks. They had 6600 horsepower and a top speed of 85 miles per hour. The X in the model name stands for experimental. They are 98 feet long and were testbeds for technology that would go into future EMD products.

All of the centennial locomotives were retired in 1985 after hauling around 2 million miles each. Union Pacific 6936 was operated in the heritage fleet until 2016. There are currently 11 survivors.
