An Eco-Political Drama,
GO CHARIT MANAS
a BHAAN presentation
Script, Stage Design & Direction : Gouranga Dandapat.
Synopsis of the play :
The backdrop of this political satire "Go Charit Manas" revolves around the dilemmas and nuances of the inhabitants of "sonderban", an imaginary forest land where there is a peaceful cohabitation of various animals, birds, toiling men, Dakshin Ray and Bonobibi. All of them stayed together with fun and frolic. However, suddenly this simple life of the inmates is disturbed. The cow mother or “Go Mata” becomes the emblem of the Indian nation and nationhood. The Indian (Hindu) nation is manifested only through the worshipping of the “Go Mata” and all its symbols.
This creates a dilemma among all. The animals refuse to accept the “Go Mata” in their clan because she alone is worshipped and upheld as all that the Indian nation and nationality manifests. Hitherto only the Hanuman was worshipped and revered. The “Go Mata” is also confused and perplexed. She fails to comprehend why she suddenly becomes the main focus of this political gimmick.
There is an attempt to resolve this complex issue. All come together like animals, birds, and conniving politicians of different political parties and engage in an imaginary conversation questioning the very basic understanding and belief of the Indian nation and nationality. But alas! Nothing is resolved because all fail to come to a consensus since their vested interest blurs their logical sense and sensibility. The normal ecological balance even cannot escape the clutches of vote politics of the present Indian State.
