In this episode, HotCars contributor Michael Van Runkle tries to strip all the accessories off the Porsche 914's Type 4 Volkswagen engine and drain out the ancient oil. The previous owner claimed the car ran but backfired before he parked it a year ago. Now, this flat-four looks pretty ragged and rusty even to amateur eyes.
Before the motor goes into a machine shop, the fan shroud, impeller, distributor, oil cooler, and exhaust all need to come off. Then, the moment of truth arrives when the engine oil struggles to even flow out, clogged up by nasty clumps. At this rate, there's no telling what might be going on in there and it sure seems like the previous owner might have been telling some tall tales.
