Trees weren't meant for just in-ground planting. Despite living in a cold zone 5b climate, I love sinking tropical trees like brugmansia into containers for my patio. No matter what tree or shrub you choose, it's inevitable that they'll eventually outgrow their accommodations. That's where root pruning comes in and it sounds intimidating but is so not. Let me show you how I do it!

Also, I'm planting around the base of the tree this year with some pretty cool annuals from Proven Winners that can be planted pot and all right into my container. They're called Eco+ Grande containers from Proven Winners and they're made entirely from plants! So no waste and the pot also feeds the plants as it decomposes. Win-Win!

Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5b in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.
