After 13 years of helping American families adopt children from China and other Asian countries, Gladney Center for Adoption formalized our Asia Waiting Child program in China, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Thousands of girls and boys in Asian orphanages who are available for intercountry adoption are older or have a medical need.

In 2007, Gladney Center for Adoption joined forces with a program called Superkids that provides therapeutic support to children with special needs in Chinese orphanages. As a result of specific relationships with caregiving organizations in Asia, Gladney has been able to supplement adoption files on the children with hands-on assessments by American doctors and early childhood development specialists. This medical information empowers Gladney staff to better understand the children's needs and advocate for adoptive families for them accordingly, demystifies the term "special needs", and allows adoptive families to make informed decisions and better prepare themselves to parent and care for their children. By utilizing the strength of Superkids and the valuable medical information gained for waiting children, Gladney has been able to find adoptive families for children who would otherwise have lived a lifetime in orphanages without the love and care of families. Gladney Center for Adoption expanded the Superkids program into Taiwan in 2012 and is working to establish the program in the Philippines in 2014.

Starting as a tiny team providing rehabilitation services to children with special needs, Superkids has grown to a broad coalition of physicians, early childhood development specialists, teachers, and volunteers who have improved the lives of 1,500 institutionalized children via medical and rehabilitation services, including hands-on physical, speech, and play therapy. Superkids provides caregiver training to advance attitudes towards children with special needs so that they develop beyond previous expectations and reach mobility milestones. Superkids also provides direct support, such as delivering specialized bottles for children with cleft lip/palate, training caregivers on their use, and arranging transport for children in need of surgeries and follow-up care.

The world of intercountry adoption has changed significantly and continues to evolve with 85% of Gladney Center for Adoption's Asia program placements last fiscal year being Asia Waiting Children. It is Gladney's goal to find loving homes for as many of these children as we can. Obtaining hands-on, eyes-on medical evaluations of Asia's designated waiting children by Superkids specialists and then identifying prospective couples who have a parenting heart for these special children is costly. With your support, Gladney Center for Adoption will be able to make an impact on the lives of these children by getting to know them, advocating for them, and placing them in permanent, loving adoptive families.
