This is a a quick tour of the hidden trails behind Great Sand Dune National Park. This has turned out to be one of my favorite trails because of the speed you can get on it. Plus I like sliding around in the sand.

Definitely worth the visit, even if it is off the beaten path. This National Park is a bit off the beaten path. The Visitor Center is very good at explaining how these sand dunes were created. You drive to the main parking lot and walk about 20 minutes to the base of the first dunes.

The natural and diverse system of the park ranges from great sand dunes to forests, from cottonwood groves to majestic mountain peaks and tundra. The highest elevation in the park is 13,604' above sea level. The Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center and campground areas are at about 8,200'.

Mechanized or motorized vehicles are not permitted on the dunefield, and ATVs are not permitted in the park and preserve. The dunefield and most of the adjacent Sangre de Cristo Mountains are federally designated wilderness: the dunes were made a wilderness by Congress in 1976, and the Sangre de Cristos in 1993.
