Based on historical records, the area of Bali and its surroundings is known as an earthquake-prone area. Several large earthquakes have been recorded which have caused loss of life and property loss, including the 1917 earthquake, the Seririt earthquake (1976), the Culik earthquake (1979) and the Karangasem earthquake ( 2004).
In 1917 a powerful earthquake shook the entire mainland of Bali. As a result of this earthquake, 1500 people died. Earthquakes are known as Gejer Bali which means Bali shakes. The second major earthquake after Gejer Bali was the Seririt Earthquake which occurred on July 14, 1976. This earthquake had a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter Scale with the epicenter on the mainland. The Seririt earthquake killed 559 people, seriously injured 850 people and slightly injured 3,200 people. It was also reported that nearly 75% of all houses in Tabanan and Jembrana were damaged. The first Karangasem earthquake (6.0 on the Richter Scale) occurred on December 17, 1979, which killed 25 people and seriously injured 47. The impact of the earthquake had caused dozens of houses to collapse and ground cracks were found to be 500 meters long. The second Karangasem earthquake (6.2 on the Richter Scale), occurred on January 2, 2004, killing one person and injuring 33 people. Some areas that were severely damaged were Tenganan, Dauh Tukad, Abang, Tohpati, Muncan, and Bukit areas.
