Ozempic is the brand name of a drug called Semaglutide which works by mimicking one of our body’s natural hormones called Glucagon Like Peptide 1 (GLP1). Ozempic was approved for the management of high blood sugar levels in people living with Type 2 Diabetes, but some studies showed that in some people it also induced weight loss. This is what intrigued scientists and prompted them to look into whether these medications might be of any benefit in treating people living with obesity and overweight and their associated risks.
But are we aware of what to look out for when taking them?
Is BMI an accurate tool when used alone to determine whether someone lives with obesity or is overweight?
Let’s have a look together!
