This song is called “gum” and it’s about the disappointment that comes when you wait for someone to change because you hope they’ll have potential to be who you want in the future, but you keep waiting and none of your expectations are met. It took me a couple of weeks to finish because I kept making new choruses and bridges to make it more intense and catchy, but I realised that the essence of the song is quiet, raw and vulnerable.

Here are the lyrics:

Midnight
I don’t even have a single
reply
to all my earlier texts and it
tastes like
mint from gum you chew as you wait
for him to make a move
but it doesn’t happen
And you wait as it
doesn’t happen

No fights
How can I be mad when you’re
not mine?
But I sometimes wish you weren’t on the
other line
as I’m waiting like a fool ‘cause she’s out with you
And I’m hoping that you’ll leave her but it
doesn’t happen
And I wait as it
doesn’t happen

I’ll listen to your songs in the pouring rain
I’ll catch a cold to hope I hear you say
you miss me, and, you want me too
but it doesn’t
doesn’t
doesn’t
happen

And I wait, ‘cause that’s all I ever do
But what if I deserve more than you?
And I take the anxiety ‘cause that’s what I’m used to
But what if I deserve more than you?

And I wait, ‘cause that’s all I ever do
But what if I deserve more than you?
You, you, you
