The 3,090kg all-electric SUV previously known as the 'EQG' is now the 'G580 with EQ technology'. No one will call it that, but the important thing is this: G580 = 580 horsepower.

Are we the only ones fascinated by the prospect of a Mercedes that combines the anachronism of a big, blocky, luxury ex-military SUV with the latest electric drivetrain? It's like fitting a hydrogen fuel cell to the Mary Rose, or sending one of those scary robot dogs from Boston Dynamics to Crufts.

In addition to his unique badge, you'll notice a plug-in G thanks to his black eye patch, which makes him look like one of The Incredibles. The idea is to keep the car looking vintage.

But Mercedes insists the G580 is actually a better off-road car because it is electric. More torque. Better stability. Soak deeper – up to 850mm. Useful in Dubai.
