A DSR, or Data Subject Request, is a formal request made by an individual to an organization to exercise their data protection rights under laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the EU and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) in the US. These requests allow individuals to gain access to their personal data, request corrections, or take other actions regarding their information.

One key component of a DSR is the right to access, where individuals can ask an organization for details on whether their data is being processed and obtain a copy of that data. Other rights include the right to rectification, allowing corrections to inaccurate data, and the right to erasure, where individuals can request deletion of their data under certain conditions.

Additional rights include the right to restrict processing, enabling individuals to limit how their data is used, and the right to data portability, allowing them to receive their data in a structured format and transfer it to another controller. The right to object lets individuals oppose data processing for certain purposes, such as direct marketing, and there are also rights related to automated decision-making and profiling.

The process for handling DSRs involves submitting a request through various channels, verifying the requester’s identity, and responding within specific timeframes—typically one month under GDPR and 45 days under CCPA, with possible extensions. There are exceptions and limitations, such as when requests are excessive or would affect the rights of others.

DSRs are essential for ensuring transparency and trust between individuals and organizations. They empower individuals by giving them control over their personal data and help organizations comply with data protection laws, fostering positive relationships with customers and stakeholders.
