Ran on their air in late 2000, former host Emily Rooney visited the infamous project that cost over a billion US dollars at the time, to put Interstate 93 and it's surrounding intersections underneath Downtown Boston, and a focus on the Tip O'Neil Tunnel (the tunnel that's over a mile long and goes underneath the harbor water really deep, and the Zakim Bridge. The Big Dig was really infamous in the 1990s for cost overruns, parts of the city was uprooted. Not too long after this airing, in early 2001 NECN's then redone NewsNight (adding Chet Curtis to Margie Reedy) did a special report.

Years after this report, and while the project was considered to be safe, in 2005, the tunnel was flooded from a leak, they actually used submerse pumps; then there was one known civilian fatality in the summer of 2006 to a woman who died from a falling ceiling title that was mounted on epoxy - yeah epoxy. This lead to political bro-ha-ha with lame duck governor Mitt Romney and the Boston press was on full court for the week that followed that fatality as if they knew it was only when - not if something tragic would happen.

The parts where 93 once lived is now part of a "greenway" named after Rose Kennedy, and in 2021, it still well kept by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation
(This footage was posted by me more than 5 years ago on Channel 6's YouTube if this looks familiar to you! :) )
