1. [Museum overview]
The Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum is an art museum located in a quiet residential area in Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo. Until Taro Okamoto's death in 1996, the space was used as a studio and residence for nearly 50 years. In the former residence, which was destroyed by fire during the war, the family of Ippei Okamoto, Kanoko, and Taro lived for a long time, and after the war, the family of Le Corbusier, who was a favorite disciple of Le Corbusier, lived here for a long time. I built the studio after asking my friend Junzo Sakakura to design it.
The Taro Okamoto Museum is a public museum owned by Kawasaki City, and the Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum is managed by the Taro Okamoto Memorial Foundation for the Promotion of Contemporary Art. The museum also holds exhibitions other than those related to Taro Okamoto, but the memorial hall basically holds exhibitions related to Taro Okamoto.
