Trakai Castle is located 28 km west of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, on an island in Lake Galvė.
Trakai was one of the main centers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the castle was of great strategic importance.
A part of Trakai is part of the territory of the Trakai National Historical Park, and is the administrative center of the region. The urban area has a population of 4,933 inhabitants.
There are approximately 200 lakes throughout the region, of which the deepest at 46.7 meters is Galvė, which has 21 islands.
Grand Duke Vytautas the Great died in the castle without being crowned King of Lithuania in 1430. During the rule of Sigismund II, the castle was redecorated in the Renaissance style and served as a summer residence for the monarchs for a short time. Later, it served as a prison. During the conflicts with the Principality of Moscow, the castle was damaged and never rebuilt, so it fell into disrepair for several centuries.
During the 19th century, a plan was started for the reconstruction of the castle. In 1905, the Russian imperial authorities decided to partially restore it. During World War I, the Germans brought in their specialists, who made several attempts to restore it. Lithuanian and Polish Conservatives worked on the project, but work ceased when World War II gained in intensity. At the end of the war, a major reconstruction project began. The works began between 1951 and 1952 and the main part was finished in 1961, during the Soviet period.
