Granny women performed a vital service in Appalachia years ago, when there were few doctors or nurses in the region. These women passed down knowledge of medicinal plants and treatments and served as midwives in their communities. Today we tell the story of one such woman, Orlean Hawks Puckett, who lost more than 30 of her own children yet helped hundreds of mothers in her area birth their own children as a midwife.
