It was pretty hard to understate the significance of the BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid dual cab 4x4 before driving it… now it’s impossible.

Suddenly instant clean performance and stunning acceleration that shames most diesel utes is on tap. It’s literally a revelation to drive this thing.

That it will be on-sale October 29 in one highly-specified model at an on-road price likely to be in the mid-$60,000 bracket means it’s much more than a preview of the future. It has the potential to be the ute for many people right now.

But there are riders here. Our first drive was in constrained circumstances. It gave us a peek at the Shark 6’s capabilities without letting us really explore them.

This is a very clever powertrain but it’s also fiendishly complicated and we just don’t know how it and the chassis, body and interior that go with it will respond to the enormous variety of tasks utes are entrusted with.
