ভাগিরথী নদীর জন্ম গঙ্গোত্রী হিমবাহের প্রান্তভাগ বা স্নাউট থেকে, যা ভারতবর্ষের মানুষের কাছে গোমুখ নামে পরিচিত। গঙ্গোত্রী শহর থেকে গোমুখের দূরত্ব হাঁটাপথে প্রায় ১৮ কিলোমিটার। পথে দু'টি বিশ্রামস্থল। ভুজবাসা ও চীরবাসা। গোমুখ ছাড়িয়ে গঙ্গোত্রী হিমবাহকে আড়াআড়ি পার করে আরও ৪ কিলোমিটার এগিয়ে গেলে পৌঁছে যাওয়া যায় এক অপূর্ব সুন্দর উপত্যকায়। চিরতুষারে ঢাকা শিবলিঙ্গ, মেরু, ভাগিরথী ও আরও বিখ্যাত সব পর্বতশিখর সেই উপত্যকাকে চারিদিক দিয়ে ঘিরে রেখেছে। স্বর্গীয় সেই উপত্যকার নামই তপোবন। এই তথ্যচিত্রে গঙ্গোত্রী, গোমুখ ও তপোবনের সৌন্দর্যকে তুলে ধরার চেষ্টা করা হয়েছে। সুদীর্ঘ ২২ কিলোমিটার হাঁটাপথের বিস্তারিত চলছবি দর্শককে গোমুখ ও তপোবন যাত্রার প্রকৃত স্বাদ কিছুটা হলেও পেতে সাহায্য করবে। যাত্রাপথের দু'তিনটি মানচিত্রও তথ্যচিত্রে রাখা হয়েছে। আশা রাখি, ভবিষ্যতে যাঁরা গোমুখ বা তপোবনের পথে যেতে চান, এই মানচিত্রগুলি তাঁদের কাজে লাগবে। আগ্রহী দর্শকদের সুবিধার্থে যাত্রাপথে দেখতে পাওয়া বিখ্যাত পর্বতচূড়াগুলিকে চিহ্নিত করে দেওয়া হয়েছে।

River Bhagirathi starts its journey from the western snout of the Gangotri glacier. The snout is popularly known as the 'Gaumukh' and considered as a sacred place. Gaumukh is accessible from Gangotri by a 18 km long trek along the northern bank of the Bhagirathi. Tapovan, a high altitude meadow on the southern bank of the Gangotri glacier, is just 4 km away from Gaumukh.
