His government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic has also been questioned, with estimates suggesting 4.7 million Indians died during the crisis. Additionally, Modi's tenure has been marked by democratic backsliding, weakening democratic institutions, individual rights, and freedom of expression.

Despite controversies, Modi's policies have encouraged economic growth, increased direct foreign investment, and implemented significant reforms such as the Goods and Services Tax ¹.
