Mercedes practically invented the “4-door” coupe with the original CLS-Class back in 2004, and this latest 2019 model is as striking, as opulent, and as stylish as ever. Fitted with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine paired with a 48-volt electrical system, the latest CLS is also the first hybrid model. With 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, the CLS is certainly capable of some serious speed, but smooth acceleration and a placid suspension make it an ideal highway cruiser.

Mercedes has fitted the interior of the CLS with nearly every creature comfort imaginable: heated and cooled front seats (and heated rear seats), dual 12.3-inch infotainment and instrument displays, and even a perfume mister and ambient lighting. Unfortunately, none of this helps backseat passengers enter or exit the vehicle, which isn’t the easiest task, thanks to the CLS’ sloped rear roofline.

The 2019 CLS-Class hasn’t been evaluated for fuel economy yet, but Cliff Atiyeh recorded 25.5 miles per gallon over 936 mostly highway miles. It also has not been crash-tested, but based on the results of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (with which it shares many components), we expect the CLS to preform admirably.
