The Kentucky Bourbon Trail came into being in 1999, a product of the Kentucky Distillers Association, or KDA. It consists of member distilleries, which are listed as “stops” on the trail, though not all of the distilleries support tours. There are four gateway regions designated for the trail; these are Northern Kentucky, Lexington, Louisville, and Bardstown. The eighteen stops of the main Bourbon Trail are scattered around these four gateways. There is also a Craft Tour, also divided into four regions, with a total of 28 stops. The craft tour is focused on the continuing re-emergence of craft bourbons in the United States.
