Vaun and Martin yearn to transform the bland backyard in their suburban project home in country Victoria. A difficult job when the property is directly overlooked by the neighbour’s two storey house and there is a steel boundary fence to disguise.

Their son and daughter-in-law, both landscape architects, have come up with a daring design - reimaging traditional garden rooms into a contemporary walled space.

Michael McCoy returns two years after the garden was completed to reassess the burnt orange walls, the steel mesh clothed in climbers, apertures that frame the views and the collection of boulders that form the centrepiece.
