The panel event, which was entitled, “Racial Disparities in Public School Discipline and the Rise of Progressive Discipline” was moderated by Adjunct Professor of English Matt Colburn. It featured panelists Darby Hickey, Senior Legislative Analyst of the Office of DC Councilmember David Grosso, Professor Cecelia Alvarado, Education Program Coordinator, University of the District of Columbia Community College, and Dr. Michelle Chatman, Assistant Professor in the Administration of Justice Program, University of the District of Columbia. The panelists discussed racial bias in public school discipline, the drawbacks of punitive consequences such as suspensions or expulsions, and the benefits of newer practices such as restorative justice. The panel was well-attended, with several professors bringing their classes. The event was interactive, with many students asking questions.
