In Episode 10 of the Quest for Perfection on the 1997 BMW E36 M3 sedan, we finally begin to address the exterior paint and attempt to improve the cosmetics with a thorough clay bar application of the hood and roof, followed by a two-stage polishing process with Sonax products.

After six weeks of ownership, it's time for the paint to get some TLC. With a bunch of other projects out of the way and the car parked indoors but unable to gain unfettered access to the interior because of space, it made sense to start addressing the paint because it was much easier to get two with a pair of vehicles in the garage. We started with a Griot's Garage paint-specific clay bar application to both hood and roof, then used Sonax Cut Max and the Rupes BigFoot random orbital polisher to apply the first stage of polish to the M3. Cut Max is a slightly heavier cut polish designed to address deeper scratches or imperfections and not knowing if the BMW had ever been adequately polished, it made sense to start with this compound and undo 20 years of unintentional neglect.

We followed up the Cut Max with Sonax EX 04-06, a finer polish designed to smooth out remaining imperfections and leave a glossier shine. The results were excellent and while some faint scratches do remain, they are not easily visible and the surrounding shine hides them well. For a 20-yr old vehicle with 56,000 miles, the paint on the M3 is a solid 9.25/10.
