Bento Gonçalves is a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the southern region of Brazil. At the end of the 19th century, the government of the Empire of Brazil colonized the region with a European population. In this way, thousands of immigrants, mostly Italians from the Veneto region, but with some members from other origins such as Germans, French, Spanish and Poles, crossed the sea and climbed the Serra Gaúcha, exploring an area still almost entirely virgin.

After a beginning full of difficulties and deprivation, the immigrants managed to establish a prosperous city, with an economy based initially on the exploitation of agricultural products, with emphasis on grapes and wine, whose success is measured in the rapid expansion of commerce and industry. in the first half of the twentieth century. At the same time, the rural and ethnic roots of the community began to lose relative importance in the economic and cultural panorama, as urbanization progressed, an enlightened urban elite was formed and the city opened up to greater integration with the rest of Brazil. .

During the first government of Getúlio Vargas there was a serious crisis between the immigrants and their first descendants and the Brazilian milieu, when nationalism was emphasized and cultural and political manifestations of foreign ethnic origin were severely repressed. After World War II, the situation was appeased, and Brazilians and foreigners began to work together for the common good.

In 2016, the municipality adopted Talian as a co-official language, alongside Portuguese.

Its economy is based on the production of grapes and wine, tourism and the furniture sector, making it the largest furniture hub and one of the largest industrial and tourist hubs in Brazil.
